Two ways to strengthen your health cover

Medical costs keep rising, and a single serious illness can exceed what a typical base policy pays. Two products help close that gap without a large jump in premium:

  • Super top-up: an indemnity policy that pays hospital bills above a yearly deductible.
  • Critical illness (CI): a fixed-benefit policy that pays a lump sum on diagnosis of a listed serious illness.

They solve different problems, and many families end up holding both.

How a super top-up works: an illustration

Suppose you have a ₹5 lakh family floater and add a ₹20 lakh super top-up with a ₹5 lakh deductible (all figures illustrative, ignoring co-payments and limits).

Hospital bills in the year Base policy pays Super top-up pays
₹3 lakh, one admission ₹3 lakh Nil
₹4 lakh + ₹4 lakh, two admissions ₹5 lakh ₹3 lakh
₹18 lakh, one admission ₹5 lakh ₹13 lakh

The deductible works most smoothly when it matches your base cover, so the two policies hand over neatly. If your base cover is from your employer, think about what happens when you change jobs.

How critical illness cover works

A CI policy pays its full sum insured once a covered illness is diagnosed and meets the policy definition, generally after a survival period set out in the policy. The money is yours to use: treatment in another city, EMIs while you recover, or replacing lost income. Many stand-alone CI policies end once the payout is made.

Because the benefit is not linked to bills, CI works alongside mediclaim rather than replacing it. Size it around the income you might lose — often a year or more of earnings — rather than expected hospital costs.

Things to compare before you choose

  • Deductible level and how it fits your base or employer cover
  • List of illnesses covered and their severity definitions
  • Survival period and initial waiting period for CI
  • Pre-existing disease waiting periods in both policies
  • Room-rent limits and co-payment in the super top-up
  • Whether CI is stand-alone or a rider, and until what age it runs
