What is NPS?

The National Pension System is a defined-contribution retirement scheme regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). You contribute during your working years, a pension fund manager of your choice invests the money, and at retirement the corpus is used partly as a lump sum and partly to buy an annuity that pays you a regular pension.

Unlike a traditional pension, nothing is promised upfront. What you get depends on how much you put in, for how long, and how the markets do.

How NPS works in India

Contributions are invested across equity (E), corporate debt (C), government securities (G) and a small alternative assets option (A). Under auto choice, the mix moves from equity towards bonds as you age; under active choice, you decide within limits.

Tier I Tier II
Purpose Retirement pension Voluntary savings
Withdrawals Restricted till 60 Allowed any time
Tax deduction Yes, mainly in the old regime Generally none
Annuity at exit Required for part of corpus Not required

An illustrative example: Anil, 35, earns ₹15 lakh a year and stays in the old regime, where his top slab is 30%. Putting ₹50,000 a year into NPS under 80CCD(1B) cuts his tax by ₹15,000 plus cess. If he moves to the new regime, he loses that deduction, though his employer's NPS contribution still counts.

Who should consider NPS

NPS suits people who want a disciplined, low-cost way to save for retirement and won't need the money before 60. Salaried employees gain most when their employer contributes under 80CCD(2). Self-employed people without EPF can use it as their main pension account. It may suit you less if you want full access to your savings or prefer fixed, declared rates.

Things to compare before you start

  • Equity share — how much market risk fits your age and your other holdings.
  • Pension fund manager — long-term performance across schemes, published on the NPS Trust website.
  • Tax regime — whether the 80CCD(1B) deduction is actually useful to you.
  • Exit plan — the current lump-sum and annuity rules, and annuity options from different insurers.
