What are guaranteed savings and annuity plans?

These are life insurance policies built for certainty rather than growth. In a non-participating (non-par) savings plan, the insurer writes the maturity or income amounts into the policy on day one. In an annuity, you hand over a sum and the insurer pays you a fixed pension, either for a set period or for life.

Three broad types fall under this heading:

Type You pay You get
Guaranteed savings (non-par) Regular premiums for a few years Lump sum or income, as per the policy terms
Whole life plan Premiums for a set period Cover to an advanced age, sometimes with income
Annuity (immediate or deferred) A lump sum or a few premiums Pension for life or a fixed period

Where they fit in an Indian financial plan

For a retiree, the biggest worry is outliving savings. An annuity transfers that risk to the insurer: it keeps paying even if you live to 95. That makes it a useful base layer alongside more flexible options such as the Senior Citizens' Savings Scheme, bank FDs and debt funds.

A guaranteed savings plan suits a fixed future need — college fees due in 12 years, for instance — where knowing the exact amount matters more than chasing higher returns.

The trade-offs

Certainty has a price. Because the insurer carries the interest-rate risk, the effective yield is often modest once you work it out from the benefit illustration. Your money is also tied up: surrendering in the early years can return much less than you paid in.

Inflation is the quieter risk. A pension of ₹30,000 a month (illustrative) may feel comfortable at 60; by 75 it buys noticeably less. Some annuities offer a payout that increases each year to soften this, at the cost of a lower starting amount.

Things to compare before you choose

  • The effective yield (IRR) on the benefit illustration, not just the total payout
  • Surrender value schedule and whether a policy loan is available
  • Annuity option: single life, joint life, return of purchase price or increasing
  • Payout frequency and the date income starts
  • How maturity and annuity income will be taxed in your hands
