What futures and options are
Futures and options are derivatives: contracts whose value comes from an underlying index or stock.
- A future is an obligation to buy or sell the underlying at an agreed price on a set expiry date. Gains and losses are settled every day through mark-to-market.
- An option gives the buyer the right, but not the obligation, to buy (a call) or sell (a put) at a fixed strike price. The buyer pays a premium. The seller receives it and takes on the obligation.
Both trade in lots, so a single contract controls exposure many times larger than the margin you put up. That leverage is what defines F&O, and it is also the main danger.
How F&O trading works in India
Index and stock derivatives trade on NSE and BSE under SEBI's supervision. A few points matter in practice:
- Index derivatives are cash-settled. Stock derivatives are physically settled, so an in-the-money stock position held to expiry means taking or giving delivery of the shares.
- Margin is collected upfront, including the full premium on options you buy. If the market moves against you, you must add margin quickly or the broker may close your position at a loss.
- Contract terms change. Lot sizes, expiry days and margin rules are revised from time to time, so last year's understanding may not hold today.
- Costs compound. Brokerage, STT, exchange charges, stamp duty and GST apply to every trade, and frequent trading multiplies them.
Who should, and should not, consider it
| F&O may fit | F&O is unlikely to fit |
|---|---|
| Experienced traders with a written risk plan | First-time investors |
| Those hedging holdings they already own | Anyone hoping for a regular income from trading |
| Money that can be lost entirely | Goal savings, emergency funds or borrowed money |
The regulator's research is sobering. Across years and market conditions, the typical individual F&O trader has ended up with a loss, and heavy traders have often lost the most. Treat any promise of steady F&O income as a warning sign.
Before you activate the segment
- Read the risk disclosure your broker shows you, slowly
- Understand how margin calls work and what happens at expiry for stock positions
- Work out the total cost per trade, not just brokerage
- Set aside only money you can afford to lose entirely, separate from your long-term savings
Our team handles activation, documents and service requests. We do not give trading calls or strategies, and we will say so if we think F&O is a poor fit for your situation.
